New Owners of It’s Greek To Me Minneapolis Bring A Sense of Philoxenia and Modern Greek Cuisine

Long-time Greek restaurant in Uptown adds a new flourish to Greek fare, yet keeps classic menu favorites MINNEAPOLIS, MN, NOVEMBER 6, 2017

The iconic It’s Greek to Me Minneapolis introduces new owners Athena Ginakes-Karos and Nick Karos, long-time restaurateurs, who have brought a new vitality and a sense of philoxenia (“fil-o-xe-nee’-ah”), “Greek love of hospitality, generosity, and sharing,” to this classic Mediterranean Twin Cities restaurant, long situated in the bustling Lyn-Lake neighborhood.

Immersed in Greek culinary culture all their lives, the couple has introduced an imaginative, modern flair to their menu, offering sustainable ingredients, unique pairings, fire-roasted specialties, and healthful vegan and gluten-free dishes, using local, regional, and international seasonal and organic components, along with keeping the best-loved dishes the restaurant is known for.

Athena grew up in Canada where her parents, Mary and Jimmy Ginakes, taught her philoxenia while she helped manage their long-serving restaurants, now run by her siblings.  She then traveled the world, absorbing universal trends and becoming a teacher of cultural education.  Athena attends worldwide food expos and continues to return to the Mediterranean to bring back authentic products from her artisan family, as well as textiles and decorative designs, for her Athena Epicurean line.  She finds new culinary imports, gathering international specialties from villages and markets to use in her restaurant’s distinctive dishes.

Nick’s love for philoxenia and his passion for distinctive cuisine, returned him to his culinary roots after a lengthy Wall Street career.  Along with his knowledge and creativity, Nick brings a new vivacity to the Uptown restaurant scene, particularly around the robust bar area, where his restaurant offers handcrafted, made-from-scratch cocktails, pairings, and gustatory bar bites.

Executive Chef Chad Grant has been creating flavorful, succulent dishes since he began working in a kitchen at the age of eighteen.  He graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in 2004, and then found his way to beautiful Taormina, Sicily, where his love for Mediterranean cooking flourished.  He has managed some of the Twin Cities’ acclaimed kitchens, most recently as chef and partner at Victory 44 in Minneapolis.
